Garage Door Off Its Track

A garage door off its track means the rollers have slipped out of – or broken inside – the vertical or horizontal rail that guides the door. Left as-is, the door cannot move safely and the cables carrying the spring load will begin to stress unevenly, risking a secondary failure. Stop using the opener immediately and do not try to pull the door by hand until the situation is assessed.

Call (970) 536-1724

The track itself is rarely the root problem. What actually failed is almost always a roller, a bent section of track, a broken cable, or a spring that let go on one side. When a spring breaks, the tension it was holding redistributes unevenly across the door, and the side with the dead spring drops – pulling the bottom roller off the floor track or the top roller out of the curve. Understanding which of these is in play changes the repair path significantly, so diagnosing it before touching anything is the whole job on arrival.

Why It Happens

Worn or Shattered Rollers

Rollers are the nylon or steel wheels that ride inside the track channel. Nylon rollers crack after years of use, especially in garages that see temperature swings – the plastic fatigues and the wheel goes out of round, then pops out of the rail under load. You can usually spot this: look at the rollers still in the track and check whether any look chipped, have a flat spot, or are visibly cracked. If the roller stem is bent rather than the wheel itself, that points to an impact event – a car bumper, a bicycle, a storage shelf.

Bent or Misaligned Track

The vertical track on each side of the door needs to be plumb and the gap between the rail and the door edge needs to be consistent – roughly the thickness of a quarter, though the exact spec varies by door weight. If a section of track has been hit, or if a mounting bracket has worked loose from the wall, the track bows inward or outward and the roller cannot follow the curve. Look at the track from the side while the door is down: a kink or a gap where the track pulls away from the wall is a visible sign. Do not attempt to hammer track back into shape yourself – the bending changes the metal’s strength and a field-straightened track rarely holds.

Broken or Detached Cable

Each side of the door has a lift cable that runs from the bottom corner bracket up to the spring drum. When a cable frays through or jumps off the drum, that side of the door drops and the lower roller leaves the track. You can often see the cable hanging slack or coiled on the floor near the bottom of the door. Cables work directly with the torsion or extension spring system, which is under extreme tension. Do not touch a slack cable or try to re-wind it – this is a job for a trained technician with the right winding bars and safety protocol. Call your local Servo Garage Doors team and leave the door where it is.

Broken Spring (Torsion or Extension)

A broken spring is probably the most common cause of a door suddenly jumping the track. Torsion springs run horizontally above the door on a metal shaft; extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side. When a torsion spring breaks, you typically hear a sharp bang – like a firecracker – and the door feels impossibly heavy because the counterbalance is gone. Look at the spring above the door: a broken torsion spring has a visible gap in the coil. Extension springs on older systems sometimes snap and the broken half drops into the track, which is itself what pushes the roller out. Spring replacement requires releasing stored tension safely. Do not attempt it. Call (970) 536-1724.

What to Do Right Now

What to Do Right Now
  • Stop using the opener. Running the motor against a jammed door stresses the drive mechanism and can strip the trolley carriage or bend the door panels further. Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release cord hanging from the trolley – this decouples the door from the motor so neither damages the other.
  • Do not force the door by hand. If a cable or spring has failed, the door is carrying uneven load. Pulling it up or down without knowing what has let go can cause the door to fall or a spring to release suddenly.
  • Photograph what you can see. Take photos of the roller that left the track, the track itself, and the area around the spring and cable drums. This helps your technician arrive with the right parts and speeds up the written estimate.
  • Check whether the door will lock manually. If the door is partially open and you cannot close it, slide the manual lock bar into the locked position to keep it from dropping. If it’s stuck closed, that’s the safer of the two positions – leave it.
  • Keep people and vehicles out of the doorway. A door under uneven spring tension or resting partially off its track is unpredictable. Treat the opening as blocked until the technician clears it.

How We Fix It

When your local Servo Garage Doors technician arrives, the first thing they do is a physical check of the full door system – not just the spot where the roller left the track. The visible problem and the root cause are often two different points on the door, and quoting only the visible damage leads to the second service call that nobody wants.

Once the cause is identified, you get a flat written price and written scope before any work starts. That is Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, and it applies here the same as it does on every other job. The technician photographs the failed component – the cracked roller, the kinked track, the broken spring coil – before quoting a replacement. That is Clause 4, the founding rule Servo was built on in 2015.

The actual repair typically involves re-seating or replacing rollers, straightening or replacing the damaged track section, and re-threading the cable onto the drum. If a spring has broken, it is replaced as a matched pair to keep tension balanced. Most off-track repairs are completed in a single visit under the Garage Door Repair service. The job closes with a documented photo record delivered to you – evidence of what was found and what was done, included on every visit. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if it is not right, we make it right.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 5.0 from 3+ reviews

"Opener had been stalling for months. The tech showed me the logic board reading, replaced the board instead of the whole unit, and it cost a third of the other quote I had."

- Robert K.

"They sent a photo of the snapped torsion spring before quoting anything. Price on the estimate was the price on the invoice. I have never had that happen with a home repair."

- Dana W.

"Text came through with the technician name and photo twenty minutes before he arrived. Small thing, but I stopped worrying about who was at the door."

- Priscilla M.
